Kings Arms Share Offer
Community Hub and Village Resource
Welcome to the Kings Arms, Ballantrae
The King’s Arms is an historic 18th century building in the centre of Ballantrae, South Ayrshire. The Ballantrae Trust purchased the King’s Arms for the community in September 2020 at the height of the pandemic to transform the last pub in our village into The King’s Arms Community Pub and Hub.
Our aim is to restore this well-loved building to its traditional place at the heart of the village and to establish:
- a friendly local where villagers can meet with friends at any time of day
- a place to get a reliably good pint or a decent meal without the need and the expense of travelling elsewhere
- somewhere to have coffee and a cake, a light lunch or afternoon tea
- a place to hold family celebrations – such as an 18th birthday party or wedding reception;
- a regular meeting place for small groups such as a book group, a darts team, or music events
News Update September 2021
NEW KING’S ARMS TELEPHONE NUMBER : 01465 757060
A lot has been happening at The King’s Arms over recent weeks. We’ve extended our opening hours to 7 days, are now serving food 6 days a week and have installed a coffee machine so we can serve more than alcohol. Mark our manager and his team have done an outstanding job to get us to this stage. We held a “thank you” evening for our volunteers in mid-August, a well-attended “family day” on 14th of August and an “inaugural Sunday roast” the following day. Since then, Mark and his team have served over 1000 meals. We have started to make the detailed arrangements for our first AGM (likely to be November), and are looking for new board members.
New Opening Hours
Monday: bar 11am to 11pm; food served 12 noon until 8.30pm
Tuesday: bar 11am to 11pm; no food – kitchen CLOSED
Wednesday: bar 11am to 11pm; food served 12 noon until 8.30pm
Thursday: Friday and Saturday; bar 11am to 12.30am; food served 12 noon until 8.30pm
Sunday: Bar 11am to 12am; food served 12 noon until 8pm (Sunday roast)
Please book your table to avoid disappointment.
All of the share certificates have now been hand delivered by volunteers or posted out. Over 220 people have invested more than £60,000 to help secure the future of The King’s Arms, Ballantrae’s last remaining pub. This means that we have surpassed our initial fund-raising target of £35,000 but we still have a way to go to reach our upper target of £130,000. If you applied to invest but haven’t received your share offer certificate yet, please get in touch with us. If you are already an investor, you can increase your shareholding if you wish. We will also welcome new investors if you know of someone who is interested. Our contact details can be found below.
New Board Members
The existing inaugural management committee will stand down at the AGM. The first step towards the AGM therefore is to seek nominations for a new board of directors and Ballantrae Community Pub members (shareholders) have been informed and have until 24th September to submit nominations.
The new board will comprise up to 12 members. “Community Members” i.e., people ordinarily living within the Ballantrae Community Council area must comprise more than half of the total number of Directors on the Board. This is to ensure that the King’s Arms remains under the control of the local community. 4 members of the board may be nominated by Ballantrae Trust (the Trust being the “anchor organisation”). This leaves a maximum of 8 others, 6 of whom will be “Contributory Members” (i.e. shareholders) while 2 places may be taken up by Co-opted Directors (people co-opted for their particular skills), who need not be members of the Society.
You will find more information including Frequently Asked Questions, on our website www.kingsarmsballantrae.co.uk/AGM.
Although our manager, chef, bar staff and cleaner are paid members of staff they are supported by a team of volunteers who have been working hard in the background, upgrading and maintaining the property inside and out, doing the book-keeping, exploring sources of funding and publicising what The King’s Arms has to offer. If you have skills you could offer then Sue Macdougall our Volunteer Coordinator would be pleased to hear from you on 07737280163.
We hope to see you in the King’s Arms sometime soon!
